I have set up a separate gallery for bird reflections. There’s just something about a bird either looking at itself in water or showing its own reflection as it flies over a lake that is especially beautiful and produces some of my favorite shots ever. Here are some of those favorites. I highly recommend clicking on any image to view it larger. Groups of images can be scrolled through by clicking on any image in the group.

Reflections

Hawks

Red-tailed Hawks don’t particularly like being in or around water. But this hawk must have been thirsty and looking for a drink.

Wood Ducks

Wood ducks are one of the most beautiful duck species there is, especially the color-loaded male wood duck. Add in reflected water from the Fall and you have a colorful composition.

Herons

There is something about a Great Blue Heron that lends itself perfectly to being near a reflection of either itself or the water or nearby vegetative growth.

The image of a Black-crowned Night Heron standing in front of a rushing river is called Meditation. I took it with a slow shutter speed to get the soft water effect. The heron never moved a muscle fortunately!

Egrets

Snowy Egrets are our most common egret species here in Colorado. They are beautiful birds especially when their image is captured near a reflection.

Kingfishers

Belted Kingfishers are fast, jittery and hard to photograph in flight so it’s an extra treat to get them with a reflection nearby.

White Birds

Above - Although the American White Pelican is common in later Spring through early Fall, I saw this Pelican weeks after all the other pelicans had migrated for the winter. It enabled me to get a shot of just a solitary pelican, something I hadn’t been able to do before.

Above - I couldn’t believe my luck in capturing a rare (for Colorado) Trumpeter Swan floating in a lake. I got down on the shore in the mud and snow and captured this image (it was totally worth doing extra laundry that day!)

Other Birds

Here is a variety of other birds in a reflection setting
